THE SOUL SPIRIT OF FLAMENCO
The porrina of Badajoz: a Flamenco legend
José Salazar Molina was a gypsy who was born in the upper area of the capital of Badajoz in 1924. He was a child with a lot of art and from a very early age he stood out with his songs. At seven years old he was relatively well-known in Badajoz and before he was 30 he was already an important flamenco figure on the national scene.
Singing and passion
Like many other artists in the region, he had to leave Extremadura – he went to Madrid – to experience success. However, he was a great devotee of the Virgin of Soledad and did not miss her appointment with her every Holy Week to sing to her.
He is a staunch defender of the gypsies, full of spirit, sincerity and also peculiarities, like his usual carnation on the lapel of his suits and his dark glasses. Maybe he didn’t know it, but he was doing marketing, since these two elements together are easily recognizable to a good connoisseur of flamenco or a person from Badajoz.
Gypsy from Badajoz,
one hundred percent gentleman,
I sing with my heart
and the one who knows how to understand me
He knows I have value.
